About Konkan Railway
The Konkan Railway was the missing link between India’s commercial capital, Mumbai, and Mangalore. The 741-kilometre line connects Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka States — a region of criss-crossing rivers, plunging valleys and mountains that soar into the clouds.
The Konkan is a coastal strip of land bounded by the Sahyadri hills on the east, and Arabian Sea on the west. It is a land where mythology breathes side by side with economic growth,a land with rich mineral resources, dense forest cover and a landscape fringed with paddy, coconut and mango trees. The formidable terrain to be conquered and the short construction period meant that the project could only be completed with the help of several technological innovations. Apart from setting a trend for other infrastructure projects in the country, the Konkan Railway provides concrete proof of the skills of Indian engineers, their discipline, team spirit and courage. But it is also a tribute to the unconquerable human spirit. Beyond the technical jargon, it was a leap of faith that made the long cherished dream of the people of the region possible.
CSR policy
Brief background of Konkan Railway & its CSR activities
Construction of “Konkan Railway” – probably the most challenging Railway Project of independent India passing through rugged terrain of Western Ghat – was completed in 1998 giving a new direction to development of coastal regions of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.
While contributing its share in country’s development, Konkan Railway, as a responsible Corporate Citizen, also discharges its Corporate Social Responsibility in a mission mode, focusing on computer literacy, green energy, health care, education, environment sustainability to name the few.
Vision Statement of Konkan Railway for CSR activities is : To be a corporate with its strategies, policies and actions aligned with wider social concerns, through initiatives in education, health, environment and socially relevant matters.
In line with the mission and Vision Statement Konkan Railway has identified Education & Skill Enhancement, Green Energy and Environment sustainability to cover under its CSR program
Konkan Railway also has introduced a unique mode of transport called RORO for cargo truck, wherein loaded / empty trucks are loaded on specially designed Railway Wagons, and are transported over its network. The rail-wheel interaction has minimum friction of coefficient. This results in transportation of same quantum of Cargo at minimum possible consumption of fuel, thereby saving millions of litres of fuel every year.
This has cascading benefits like reduction in consumption of Hydro-Carbon, reduction in pollution, de congestion of roads and reduction in road accident. It, however, needs to be mentioned here that despite these direct and collateral benefits, these services are not part of our CSR activities.
Beneficiary group/s and geographical area/s for intervention.
Konkan Railway believes that education, sanitation and environment sustainability are the key factors for sustainable development of Indian Society. Education – including skill enhancement – uplifts the society most significantly and provides the weaker section a means of earning livelihood.
Importance of sanitation and environment sustainability cannot be overemphasized. Both go together. While sanitation is important at individual level, environment sustainability has a much larger impact that can affect the generations to come. Konkan Railway looks at Solar energy as an important means to reduce carbon footprint.
The Konkan Railway has also in a way changed the lives of the Engineers and other people associated with the project. For them it was the glory of overcoming all odds, and the satisfaction and pride that they have built something for posterity.
The completion of the Konkan Railway was a “tryst with destiny” for many people in the Konkan region, redeemed in the 50th year of the nation’s Independence. It is hence entirely fitting that the first train on the completed track was flagged off on January 26, 1998, Republic Day.
