The railways at Nagpur were established a long time back, well before the independence of India, as Nagpur used to be an important city of India even then. 1867 marks the beginning of the Nagpur railways. In 1881, Nagpur was linked up with another important city of India, Kolkata, via the railways of the state of Chhattisgarh.

Among the 22 stations in India which have been recommended to be upgraded to international standard, Nagpur railway station is one of them. Work is to be sourced out to the Public-Private Partnerships and the Central Railway has identified priority areas like security, safety and cleanliness for the station. The close-situated Ajni is planned to be developed as a terminus and is also under consideration with a vision of diverting the traffic from the Nagpur railway station in the long run. A proposal to develop Ajni as a coaching complex is also under way.The main complex has waiting and retiring rooms for passengers awaiting connecting trains. It also has ‘Comesum’, the IRCTC authorized multicuisine food plaza in the main building, having seating capacity of 150 people.The Retiring Rooms are available at the rent rates of 250 rupees, for those with air conditioning and 200 rupees without.
