Sambalpur Railway Station, located in the Indian state of Odisha, serves Sambalpur in Sambalpur district. There are four other railway stations serving Sambalpur – Sambalpur Road Railway Station(SBPD), Sambalpur City Railway Station(SBPY), Hirakud (HKG), across the Mahanadi and Maneswar Railway Station(MANE). In 1960, Indian Railway took up three projects: the Kottavalasa-Koraput-Jeypore-Kirandaul line (Dandakaranya Project), the Titlagarh-Bolangir-Jharsuguda Project and the Rourkela-Kiriburu Project. All the three projects taken together were popularly known as the DBK Project or the Dandakaranya Bolangir Kiriburu Project. The Sambalpur-Titlagarh line was opened to traffic in 1963

Electrification of the Titlagarh–Sambalpur-Jharsuguda and Angul-Sambalpur sections were sanctioned in the Railway Budget for 2012-13.Work of doubling and electrification between Sambalpur and Angul is in progress. In September 2015, the route has been electrified from Angul to Kerejanga and the work is expected to be completed in the upcoming 5 years.

There is need to start local train service between Sambalpur and Rourkela and also between Sambalpur and Angul Section of East Coast Railway within a gap of 30 minutes in each direction. Following trains are demanded by Western Odisha Passengers Association. Sambalpur – Visakhapatnam Intercity daily, Sambalpur – Chennai Tri-Weekly Superfast Express, Sambalpur – Jeypore Express Daily and Rajdhani Express to Delhi.
